Acai Bowl.

How many times have you gone onto Instagram, or Buzzfeed, or Twitter, or any form of social media, blog, website, etc, etc, etc, and seen a beautiful picture of fruit nicely arranged on top of a smoothie in a bowl. Well, today is my day!

It can go without saying that acai bowls are a clear and present fad in today's culture. Huffington Post. PopSugar. The Food Network. Refinery29. Just search "acai bowl" in Google and thousands of results will pop up - trust me, there will be no shortage of recipes, articles, or reviews. So why is Smak hoping on the basic bandwagon? Is this going to turn into one of those food trends that comes and goes? Perhaps. That being said, the health benefits from acai bowls are undeniable. Acai berries are an excellent source of antioxidants, which can help improve both skin and cardiovascular health. 

As I have been making a sincerely effort lately to start getting into better shape and living a healthier lifestyle, I've been realizing that SoulCycle can only get me so far. Yes, those 3-5 classes a week will, and have, absolutely helped me lose weight. At the end of the day though, so much of a healthy lifestyle happens in the kitchen. No more pops. Goodbye to Oreos, Doritos and candy. Instead I snack on fruit and vegetables. I try to eat lean proteins like chicken, fish and red meats here and there. One of the biggest tricks that I've learned over the past few months is the importance of replenishing your body after a workout. 

Let's take a look at an average morning for Tommy:

4:30am: Alarm goes off. 
4:45am: Second alarm goes off, I begin moving about, turning on my bedside lamp. 
5:00am: I snack on a Cliff bar and I get dressed and put my things into a backpack.
5:15am: Leave my apartment and ride my bike to SoulCycle. 
5:45am: SoulCycle class - 45 minutes.
6:30am: Finish class, down a bottle of water, ride home. 
6:50am: Take a shower and get ready for the day. 
7:15am: Make breakfast - this is typically egg whites, oatmeal, lots of coffee, and recently, acai bowls. 

No matter what your routine looks like, if you are working out regularly, it is so important to take care of your body replenish it correctly. I don't know all the science behind it, so I won't even pretend to tell you things that sound smart. So I will leave you with the rest of the Interwebs for the official information. 

My part will solely consist of providing you with this recipe for my version of the acai bowl. Enjoy!

| Acai Bowl |

Ingredients:

2 cups frozen strawberries
2 frozen bananas
4 tablespoons acai powder
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tablespoon PB2 (or any nut butter)
1/2 tablespoon honey
kiwi, sliced
blackberries
blueberries
granola
bee pollen

Directions:

  1. Add frozen fruits, acai powder, almond milk, PB2, and honey to a blender (add liquids first - this allows the blades to move smoothly). Blend until creamy and smooth. Aim for a frozen yogurt consistency, it should end up being thicker than a normal smoothie. 
  2. Spoon the acai mixture into a bowl and top with the fruit, granola, and bee pollen.
