So...here it is! Almost two months ago, on April 3, 2012, Sam Talbot - chef from Season 2 of Bravo's Top Chef - responded to one of my tweets.
I freaked out. A celebrity, sort of, tweeted me! It was a big deal... At that moment I knew that it was time, time to follow through on something that I had been saying I had always wanted to do...
START A FOOD BLOG.
I had seen Julie & Julia and loved it. The food inspired me. The movie inspired me. Freaking Meryl Streep inspired me - how could she not!? But I remember vividly going to Barnes & Noble after seeing the movie to pick up my very own copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Have you ever picked up that cookbook? First of all, it's a beast! There are 720 pages. Secondly, there are NO PICTURES. Forget that...I still to this day have not purchased the cookbook. Nor do I think I ever will.
Perhaps my favorite part of cookbooks, or blogs for that matter, are the pictures! I love being able to look at a picture and taste the food, smell the food. I want to see what I am about to make! Isn't that part of the learning process? Knowing to an extent what the final outcome is supposed to look like? Pictures help take you on a journey through a recipe.
As you can already tell, it took me quite a while to get my ass into gear and jump into this project. My job at Starbucks got in the way. A new internship began taking over the little free time that I had. My attempt at writing a book took up time. Life in general seemed to be getting in the way. No matter how much I wanted to start a blog, it didn't happen. To make matters worse...what in the WORLD was I going to call my blog? I feel like this is the life of a blog. It is the definition. It portrays the essence of the blog to the entire internet community. I didn't want to fail myself...
I tried wracking my brain but nothing came to mind. Tommy Does Food... Tommy's Take... Tommy's Kitchen... Crap, crap, and CRAP! Everything that I came up with sounded horrendous. I did not want to embarrass myself.
It wasn't until a friend of mine sent me a simple text message that it clicked...
[hmmm I'm thinking... "smak" means taste in Swedish! Hahaha]
It was genius. I knew immediately that THAT was what I wanted to call my blog. One thing you need to know about me...I am Swedish. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. The whole sha-bang! I have grown up in a family were we pride ourselves on our Swedish heritage. It is who we are. IKEA is our Mecca. Swedish meatballs and glögg are staples in the home. To say that my family displays minor levels of hubris when it comes to our heritage would be a bit of an understatement.
And in the end, SMAK was born.
What can you expect from SMAK?
- Great recipes that I have tried! I am not going to give you anything that I have not tried first hand. If I think it is worth-while...you better believe that I am going to share it with you!
- Amazing pictures! I have always, and will always, be a photography enthusiast. I love taking pictures! I have always dreamed of being a successful photographer. I will post pictures of the whole process - ingredients, steps, the final product!
- A good read! If you can't tell from this post, I love writing... I promise you that I will do everything in my power not to bore you...that is not my intent.
